Art interpretation of Czech history in the historical prose by Alois Jirásek

The thesis deals with the issues of literary-historical situation of works by Alois Jirásek in the Czech tradition of the historical novel and characteristic of literary representation of history by the writer. The thing is that after the creation of Czechoslovakia in 1918 Jirásek became the official symbol of the literature of the new state, and younger authors followed him ideologically, thematically, and after the formal construction of works. Jirásek's authority didn't weaken in the second half of the 20th century, when his method of literary interpretation of Czech history was ideologically misused. On the basis of literary analysis of two historical novels (Proti všem and Temno), the author of thesis describes Jirásek's narrative style and the means of expression that gives the writer the possibility to reach the art effectiveness of his novels. Reflection of the Highland Clearances in Historical Novels

This bachelor thesis deals with historical events of the Highland Clearances. This concept refers to the events that took place in the late eighteen century and early nineteenth century. In this time period Scottish Highlands were going through significant social and cultural changes. The Highland Clearances caused the displacement and dispersion of many thousands of local people from Highlands and Islands of the north of Scotland; mostly it was people with agricultural background who eventually had to move to big cities in the south of Scotland, to England or even abroad. These events still matter to a lot of Scots and are widely regarded as historical tragedy or trauma. This thesis focuses on analysis of 3 historical novels which portrayed these events. Specifically it is Waverley (1814), Butcher's Broom (1934) a Consider the Lilies (1968). These novels are analyzed and compared based on the origin of their author, the selection of the aspects of the Clearances, which they focus on, and its overall contribution and the form of presentation.

Translation of the French Novel Le dernier des nôtres

The master thesis treats about the multi awarded roman Le dernier des nôtres. This roman is the second written by the French novelist and journalist Adélaïde de Clermont-Tonnerre. The purpose of this thesis is the translation of some chapters of this roman into Czech language. On the following pages, we will focus on analyzing and professionally comment our way of translating. We will study the different elements composing the translation and the cultural specificities we had to consider while translating. Not less important was the general approach of theoretical translation processes and methodology, but also the problematics that could be faced by a translator. Theoretical chapters give a better understanding of translation discipline.

Reflexion of Antiquity in Historical Novels of Jarmila Loukotková

This bachelor thesis deals with the depiction of antiquity in historical novels by Jarmila Loukotková. The work first defines the concept of the "historical novelˮ and its tradition, with an emphasis on its development in the Czech lands. The next part of the work focuses on the personality of Jarmila Loukotková and her work in the literary field. In the last part the bachelor thesis focuses on the historical period discussed in selected novels by the writer. This is followed by an analysis of the historical novels about the ancient period, namely There is no Roman people (1949) and Laughter underneath a mask (1977), in terms of historical credibility. For comparison, I used Tacitus's Annales, Polybius's History IV, Plutarch's Parallel Biographies of Famous Greeks and Romans, and Suetoniusʼs Biographies of Twelve Emperors. The last part of my bachelor's thesis will focus on how the everyday life of ancient Rome is depicted in selected novels by J. Loukotková. I will pay the greatest attention to how the coexistence of man and woman is treated in the novels. The thesis also involves author's own translation of the novel Redcoat.

The concept of historicism in selected works of Alois Jirásek and Zikmund Winter

This diploma thesis deals with contribution of chosen writings by Alois Jirásek and Zikmund Winter. It tries to clarify the term historism and its infiltration into Czech literature, particularly in novels Temno and Mistr Kampanus. The thesis also outlines the period after the Battle of the White Mountain. Its consequences dramatically influenced political, religious, social and cultural conditions in the Czech lands. It defines terms historical novel and historical short story to specify the border between this genre and the other proses of the then time. The practical part gives a concrete form of a complex interpretation of novels Temno and Mistr Kampanus. It introduces a dispute over historism between Alois Jirásek and Zikmund Winter. With the aid of content analysis of chosen readers for primary and secondary schools the thesis finds out the frequency of extracts by mentioned authors in schoolbooks. In closing the thesis focuses on evaluation of searched extracts in readers and mentions also FEP.
